Neglect and Other Complex Cases: Assessing Parenting and Parental Capacity for Change

Assessing parenting is a central task for practitioners across agencies who are working with vulnerable children, young people and their families particularly in cases of neglect but also other complex cases where there are long running concerns. It is important that practitioners in a range of different roles therefore have a strong framework for understanding the parenting role and tasks and also models of change. This course will provide such models but also focus on the practical process of assessing parenting and capacity for change.

Target Group: Groups 3 - 5 Members of the workforce who work predominantly with children, young people and/or their parents/carers and who could potentially contribute to assessing, planning, intervening and reviewing the needs of a child and parenting capacity where there are safeguarding concerns

Aims & Objectives: 

By the end of this one day virtual on-line session participants will have the opportunity to explore

• Frameworks for understanding parenting and the expectations we have of parents both in terms of parenting but also in the assessment process
• Tools that can help assess parenting and the capacity for change
• The significance of social histories in assessing parenting and the capacity for change
• Strategies for engaging parents in the assessment process
• How the information gathered in an assessment can be analysed particularly in relation to the capacity for change within the child’s timescales
• How pitfalls such as disguised compliance or the start again syndrome can be avoided in the assessment process
