Local Learning on Children & Young People's Mental Health

In the media, amongst safeguarding charities and within government the last couple of years have seen increasing attention given to the mental health of children in England. Warnings have been raised nationally about the capacity of statutory mental health services to meet growing needs and concerns voiced over availability of early help or preventative support for children. A recent report from the Children’s Commissioner for England warned of an epidemic of child mental ill health and reported that not enough is done to support children before problems become serious and entrenched. There has been a rise locally in demand for mental health support, as well as suicide and self-harm amongst young people, which prompted Greenwich Safeguarding Children Board to set a priority in relation to Supporting children to maintain positive mental health, with a particular focus on deliberate self-harm and suicide. As part of this we have been prompted to ask how Greenwich’s children are supported to develop positive mental health which is resilient to the challenges of their environments. What early intervention is available for children who are beginning to show early signals of emotional distress? How do we support children experiencing more entrenched difficulties? By examining the local approach through a deep dive audit, we hoped to identify both areas of strength, opportunities for improvement and to promote an understanding of what is available and effective to support mental resilience and healthy coping in children. This briefing is being provided to disseminate the learning from that audit, including feedback from frontline practitioners, parents and children

Target Audience: Groups 2 - 4 Those in regular contact or have a period of intense but irregular contact, with children, young people and/or parents/carers including all health clinical staff, who may be in a position to identify concerns about maltreatment. Members of the workforce who work predominantly with children, young people and/or their parents/carers and who could potentially contribute to assessing, planning, intervening and reviewing the needs of a child and parenting capacity where there are safeguarding concerns. Members of the workforce who have particular responsibilities in relation to undertaking section 47 enquiries, including professionals from health, education, police and children’s social care; those who work with complex cases and social work staff responsible for co-ordinating assessments of children in need.

This 90 minute session aims to identify:

  • How Greenwich’s children are supported to develop positive mental health which is resilient to the challenges of their environments
  • What early intervention is available for children who are beginning to show early signals of emotional distress?
  •  How do we support children experiencing more entrenched difficulties?
