Promoting Positive Parenting Level 2: Managing Children’s Difficult Behaviour Effectively

Pre-requisite: Participants must have completed Positive Parenting Level 1 training (or equivalent).
This one day Level 2 workshop will focus on limit setting, discipline and punishment and how these tools can be used in judicious ways to supplement the fundamental tools of building co-operative behaviour. There will be a discussion on the use of smacking & promoting positive alternatives. Tools looked include selective ignoring, time out, loss of privileges and appropriate consequences.
Ideas taught come from social learning theory, systemic family therapy and non-violent resistance therapy
Target Group: Groups 3 – 5 Members of the workforce who work predominantly with children, young people and/or their parents/carers and who could potentially contribute to assessing, planning, intervening and reviewing the needs of a child and parenting capacity where there are safeguarding concerns. For Staff who offer parenting support and who have attended the Positive Parenting level 1 training (or equivalent).
Aims & Objectives: Using a mix of teaching, role play, video clips and discussion, we will look at
- Setting appropriate limits/boundaries;
- Differences between discipline and punishment
- Types of smacking (from least to most dangerous);
- How to punish positively and non-violently;
- EXTRA: the pros and cons of computers and internet safety and how they fit with an ethos of positive parenting
A comprehensive reading list and handouts will be provided at the end of the session
Promoting Positive Parenting Level 1, 2 & 3 is a series of learning events which aims to introduce or refresh ideas for workers in order to support parents / carers to support their children to learn to behave in cooperative ways.
