Detail:

Promoting Positive Parenting Level 2: Managing Children’s Difficult Behaviour Effectively

 Pre-requisite: Participants must have completed Positive Parenting Level 1 training.

This one day Level 2 workshop follows the level 1 workshop. Following the Connection tools of level 1 we will consider the Correction tools of level 2 and will focus on limit setting, rules & routines and the nature of effective discipline. Tools looked include how to give negative feedback in ways that do not damage the child's confidence and self-esteem. We will also look at the parenting tools of selective ignoring, time out, and time out alternatives.

Ideas taught come from social learning theory, systemic family therapy and non-violent resistance therapy.

For Staff who offer parenting support and who have attended the Positive Parenting level 1 training.

 Aims & Objectives: Using a  mix of teaching, role play, video clips and discussion, we will look at

  • Why Connection before Correction is so important
  • Setting appropriate limits/boundaries;
  • how parents / carers can avoid the 'punishment pyramid' and 'the criticism trap'.
  • the law and confusion about physical chastisement in the UK. What is legal and ways to promote non-violent alternatives to smacking.
  • How to use language that helps to manage childrens' more problematic behaviour, without squashing their spirit, using the ideas of Timing, Tone and Talk (Timing - when to to talk - Tone- how to talk - Talk - the words we say).

Target Group: Groups 3 – 5 Members of the workforce who work predominantly with children, young people and/or their parents/carers and who could potentially contribute to assessing, planning, intervening and reviewing the needs of a child and parenting capacity where there are safeguarding concerns. For Staff who offer parenting support and who have attended the Positive Parenting level 1 training (or equivalent).

A comprehensive reading list and handouts will be provided at the end of the session

Promoting Positive Parenting Level 1 & 2 is a series of learning events which aims to introduce or refresh ideas for workers in order to support parents / carers to support their children to learn to behave in cooperative ways.
