Race, Culture and Spirituality; Improving Practice with Children and Families from Black and Global Majority Communities

An interactive on-line workshop

Cultures are complex systems of shared beliefs, values, norms, and expectations which shape social structures, practices, traditions, and individuals’ psychology (including emotions) and social behaviour. Confident practice with cultural diversity is underpinned by focus on the needs of children and young people, the risks they face and their right to protection: challenging all forms of oppression, including racism and injustice and lastly valuing diversity. This course will support staff in developing a culturally sensitive approach, being able to think with children and families about their cultural identity and heritage and consider the meaning of this as part of the case work task. Since racial discrimination is an everyday reality in many children’s lives social staff must ensure agencies responses do not reflect or reinforce that experience but counteract it within practice and service delivery

Aims & Objectives: This one day On-line workshop participants will:

  • Examine local demographic, different cultural and social issues experienced by Black and minority ethnic local communities
  • Explore concepts of culture, ethnicity, discrimination, and different forms of racism- Personal, Professional, Institutional, structural, and historical legacy of oppression, including the impact on individuals and professional practice
  • Understand the challenges of racial discrimination faced by black and minority ethnic communities and the impact on children and families
  • Consider the elements that make up culturally sensitive assessment and practice
  • Develop skills in engaging children and families in discussion about their ethnic, cultural, and religious identity and practices
  • Ensure that the child and family assessment includes and analyses relevant issues of culture, ethnicity and religion including the family’s strengths
  • Understand the impact of both positive and negative stereotypes in distorting attitudes about families influence on assessments and intervention
  • Develop confidence and competence when working across different cultures within the community and address challenges and dynamics.
  • Ensure an approach to safeguarding that respects diversity but ensures all children are protected regardless of ethnicity or religious background
