Target Group: Groups 3 – 5 Staff from all Greenwich SCB agencies that are in contact/work regularly with children/young people. Multi disciplinary and agency professionals in education, health, social care,therapeutic and clinical services

Aims: This course  will examine some of the challenges and safeguarding  issues affecting young people at risk of  serious  youth and gang violence ,including social, cultural ,gender and emotional wellbeing.

Learning Objectives: The course will 

  • Explore local prevalence rates of serious youth violence in the borough and the profile of victims and perpetrators by age, gender and ethnicity
  • Examine rates of gun crime and knife injuries in Greenwich and comparatively across London boroughs
  • Examine individual, peer ,school, community and cultural risks factors effecting gang involvement for younger ages 7-12 and older ages 13-25 yrs old
  • Identify which young people are at high risk of gang activity and the signs indicators of criminal exploitation and role of females
  • Examine underlying causes of youth violence, the impact of  trauma and adverse life experiences, peer and online influence which influences decisions around organised criminal activity
  • Examine some of the serious risks associated with gang activity for young people and implications for safeguarding
  • Using a holistic THRIVE model, the course will also explore wider contextual factors, such as triggers, risk factors, vulnerabilities and effective ways to engage young people involved in serious violence
  • Explore cycle of trauma, victimisation, violence and implications for inter generational experiences
  • Identify emotional and developmental mental health difficulties experienced by young people at risk of youth violence
  • Use case study analysis and serious case reviews to explore the links between child hood traumas, vulnerabilities, criminality and victimisation in practice
  •  It will also explore the local referral and safeguarding procedures, multi agency approaches, and interventions to engage with young people affected to reduce  youth violence
