Aims & Objectives:
This course will enable participants to recognise emotional distress and deliberate self- harming behaviours among children and provide tools on how to respond appropriately and proportionately to risk
Learning Objectives:
This one day course will help professionals to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of patterns and indicators of emotional issues and self-harming amongst children and methods to assess risk
- Describe the social ,cultural and emotional pressures and identity issues that result in children being more vulnerable to emotional distress and self- harming behaviours
- Describe the significant role of internet and electronic communication in escalating emotional distress and self-harming behaviours
- Describe the meaning and significance of peer and sub-group pressure
- Introduce approaches professionals can use to build resilence in vulnerable children
- Describe proportionate and appropriate responses of professionals to particular incidents of self- harming behaviour and manage professional anxiety.
- Confidently use practical approaches in working with children to address behavioural issues and self- harming behaviours
- Demonstrate knowledge of national and local resources that can support vulnerable children and their families, including Early Help services
Target Group: Groups 3 – 5 Members of the workforce who work predominantly with children, young people and/or their parents/carers and who could potentially contribute to assessing, planning, intervening and reviewing the needs of a child and parenting capacity where there are safeguarding concerns
