Parental Mental Health: Impact on Adults, Parenting and Children's Safeguarding for Multi-Disciplinary Professionals

An increased understanding of the impact parental mental health problems may have upon children and the parenting ability of adults.

Aims: To increase the awareness of different types of mental disorders experienced by parents and how they can impact on children’s wellbeing ,development and associated risk to parental capacity .

The  course will explore how common mental disorders like depression ,bi-polar disorder and personality disorders can effect the parent child dynamic from birth to adolescence cognitive and social development.

Target Group: Groups 3 – 5 Staff from all Greenwich SCB agencies that are in contact/work regularly with children/young people whose parents have mental health problems. Multi disciplinary and agency professionals in education, health, social care,therapeutic and clinical services

Learning Objectives:  This one day virtual Workshop session will :

    • Explorie common experiences and signs of emotional distress and mental illness amongst parents and effects on children’s cognitive, social and psychological development 
    • Identify triggers to parental emotional distress; physical illness, trauma and conflicts affecting parenting styles and dynamics with children
    • Discuss the prevalence and impact of depression and other mental disorders including personality disorders, dual diagnosis and risk to children
    • Understand the risks that are posed to children and adults from deteriorating parental mental ill health
    • Identify effective policies and strategies that can be implemented across disciplines and agencies to improve services to  safeguard vulnerable children and families.
    • Participants will examine their own practice of assessing risk to children whose parents experience mental ill health
    • Examine different types of interventions for parents and children affected by personality disorders
