Assessing and Supporting Parenting Capacity Webinar

This course will examine parenting capacity. It will explore what is required from parenting and what circumstances may heighten concern by looking at messages from research and reviews, including information on SUDI. This course will heighten confidence in understanding what matters in parenting and when multiagency staff should intervene and support families, especially for children in the early years.

Target group: Those in regular contact or have a period of intense but irregular contact, with children, young people and/or parents/carers including all health clinical staff, who may be in a position to identify concerns about maltreatment.  Members of the workforce who work predominantly with children, young people and/or their parents/carers and who could potentially contribute to assessing, planning, intervening and reviewing the needs of a child and parenting capacity where there are safeguarding concerns. Members of the workforce who have particular responsibilities in relation to undertaking section 47 enquiries, including professionals from health, education, police and children’s social care; those who work with complex cases and social work staff responsible for co-ordinating assessments of children in need.

Aims & Objectives: This online virtual, multi-agency workshop aims to equip practitioners with the skills and knowledge to support and predict potential risk in families who are expecting a new baby and continue to support & risk assess familes throughout the childs infancy and childhood.

Course Outline: 

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Understand what to assess when working with parents 
    either during pregnancy or after birth within early years;
  • Have a deeper exploration of what is required when 
    working with and preparing families for parenthood;
  • Examine the range of direct work and assessment tools;
  • Understand how to examine the whole picture given the 
    current messages and research from safeguarding 
    reviews.
